More of a B&B
We stayed here as part of a medium sized group and the options in Trieste are certainly limited. The hotel is well located with most of the sights very close by and plenty of food and drink options.
The staff did their best to support our groups needs and in particular there was one morning when we left early for the day and they prepared breakfast early for us. The breakfast room is small but it didn’t prevent them delivery a really good breakfast.
The hotel has a lift which was important for our group. The air con was poor and weirdly you had to request to have it turn on and to have the temperature changed. We didn’t fuss about temperature- we just wanted it on as opening windows was not a great solution due to noise outside. In our first night…it got switched off and the staff member went home. We found each day we had to re ask for it to be switched on and this was really annoying .
The bathroom was small and the shower head positioning was pretty unusable. The next day it broke and I had to hand hold it. I was impressed that during the day a new ‘holder’ was installed but showering was never pleasant and only just functional . Room cleaning was efficient and the room always clean but the sheets were always a problem in our room as they didn’t quite fit the bed. No shampoo provided and the very nice amenity kits were never replaced . The hairdryer was outstanding!
Our room was small for two people. I don’t remember the wifi being a problem so that was a good thing.
Reception has pretty limited hours and while this is clear on their website but I find it unusual in a hotel. One of our group couldn’t re enter her room and while they provide a mobile number she had no mobile phone roaming nor speaks Italian well.
This place is really more like a big B&B.
We stayed in Trieste a year ago and much preferred our choice that time around. I can’t make huge recommendations for the James Joyce. Some of the issues are fixable (particularly reception hours and the air con control ).

Very conveniently located near main plaza and water. We were on the fourth floor but there's an elevator. Room was basically just a bed but bathroom was modern and well laid out. There's no common space to hang out in - except the breakfast room. All in all, a well-priced, convenient, pleasant place.
