The Spice aisle, this island has beautiful black sand beaches as well as some amazing luxury resorts, delicious food, beautiful historical sights, and of course the underwater museum.

The capital is not to be missed. Is it busy? Yes. But it’s also astoundingly authentic and picturesque. It’s a hilly centre, backed by a steep muddle of tropical coloured buildings, rising around a deep harbour. Some sights shouldn’t be overlooked. Head straight uphill to the Roman Catholic Cathedral, down past the House of Parliament (and note the relatively distinct lack of security). After, take a walk to the roofless ST Andrews Church, which is awaiting funding for a new roof after the hurricane and get lost in and amongst the French and English inspired faded art deco buildings. The best time to visit is Saturday morning for the Spice Market (see ‘Spice Market’).

Otherwise known as the “spice island”, Grenada is a tropical island on the southernmost trip of the Lesser Antilles. Their famous spices include huge quantities of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg, to name a few. We docked the cruise ship in St. George and wandered up to the Market Square, where it became apparent this is a less fortunate part of the island. We became eager to explore one of the island’s 45 white sand beaches. We jumped in a water taxi to Grand Anse Bay where we rented chairs and thankfully umbrellas to protect us from the blaring but welcome sun. The water was truly spectacular; this was the perfect warm, clear blue sea that we’ve heard so much about. Back on board, we heard about other’s excursions to the lush green jungle, cascading waterfalls and beautiful lakes. While we have checked Grenada off our travel list, we can see why others would want to spend more time on this enchanting island.
