Saint Croix is an island located in the Caribbean Sea. The island is also considered as a county and district of the Virgin Islands, which is an unincorporated territory of the United States. Different countries colonised the island from the 15th century to 20th century because of its resources. These included Spain, Netherlands, Great Britain, France, and Denmark, before it was sold in 1916 to the United States in exchange for US$25 million in gold under the Treaty of the Danish West Indies. Saint Croix is the largest island in the United States Virgin Islands.

Saint Croix Island has warm waters all year round, ranging from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. There are two famous destinations in this island for underwater lovers. These are Frederiksted and Salt River. The site was able to maintain its architecture that highlights the historic Victorian era. Some of the tourist destinations here include St. Patrick's Catholic Church, which was built during the 1840s, the Customs House, and the Apothecary, which is known today as pharmacy. Meanwhile, at the Salt River, people can try wall diving. It also has watersheds and mangrove forests. It is also home to the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve.

How to get around within Saint Croix

In exploring Saint Croix, tourists can try public buses under the Virgin Islands Transit or VITRAN. It is operated by the Department of Public Works of Virgin Islands. Roads in the island are rough so get ready for sharp turns. In using cars, travellers should take note of the left-hand drive policy. Many people around the world use the right-hand drive policy, especially from neighbouring countries like Puerto Rico and the United States. Aside from cars and buses, there are also taxi buses in Saint Croix. These are vans that run from Frederiksted to Christiansted. These vehicles are privately owned and do not have a fixed schedule. When taking these, people should wait by the side of the road since taxi buses does not have bus stops. The good thing about this service is that people can disembark anywhere they want along the route. The taxi buses are also not metered and have a flat rate.

How to get there

Get into Saint Croix via Henry E. Rohlsen Airport. Located about six miles or 10 kilometres southwest of Christiansted on the island of Saint Croix, this small international airport handles mainly inter-Caribbean flights. Regular flights that arrive here are mostly from the United States mainland, Puerto Rico, and Eastern Caribbean. Airlines that provide flights to and from the airport are American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, LIAT, Norwegian Long Haul, and US Airways operated by American Airlines.
