Port Moresby International Airport (POM), also known as Jacksons International Airport is the major aviation hub for Papua New Guinea. If you are hoping to explore the wilds of this fascinating country, you will likely fly into its capital of Port Moresby. Air Niugini, the flag carrying airline for the nation operates out of this airport, and if you are spending some time in the capital, you can easily traverse the 10km distance between the airport and the city centre via buses or taxis.
The Port Moresby International Airport is not the most modern facility you’ll encounter or the best equipped, but it does have all the basics that you’ll need. There is free WiFi available throughout the airport’s terminal, which makes it easy for passengers to stay in contact with friends and family while they travel.
There are also cash machines, a bank, plus a currency exchange service. If you’re hungry there is a restaurant and snack kiosk, and for shoppers, you’ll find a duty-free area within the International Terminal. Otherwise, extra features include two executive lounges you can access, a helpful information desk offering help with finding your way around Port Moresby.
You can fly direct from Australia with Air Niugini, Virgin Australia and Qantas, or hop on a connecting route with Philippine Airlines.
· Utilise Skyscanner’s car hire search tool to book your vehicle in advance of your trip, or rent one through your hotel when you arrive. The drive into town is a short one, all you need do is get on Godwin Street and follow this Cameron Road, and you will find yourself right in the centre of Port Moresby.
· Shuttle services are also available from the airport, which are also usually booked through your hotel, so it’s worth checking with them before you fly to see if a pick-up can be arranged. If not, the next best thing is to use our search engine to arrange an airport transfer so that you are assured of transport to and from the airport.
· You’ll find that there are taxis available outside the terminal buildings, but you will have to bargain with the drivers to secure a fare. Fares should come to around 50 or 60PGK ($20-25) unless you are a world-class haggler.
