Colorado is a western U.S. state named for the Colorado River. It is located in the Rocky Mountains region, enveloping most of the Southern Rocky Mountains, the western edge of the Great Plains, and the north-eastern portion of the Colorado Plateau. The Rocky Mountains split down the Colorado in the middle from north to south. Colorado has the highest overall elevation in the continental U.S. states, as well as the highest peaks of the Northern American Rockies. The capital is the city of Denver.

What to see & do

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo - America's only mountainside zoo can be found on Cheyenne Mountain, southwest of downtown Colorado Springs. The zoo takes up 140 acres, although only 40 acres are in use. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is home to over 750 animals of nearly 150 species, over 30 of which are declared as endangered species. Visitors can tour the zoo on foot or by riding the Zoomobile/tram, and can take the open air chairlift ride called the Mountaineer Sky Ride to reach the zoo's event area. In addition to featuring animal exhibits, rides, and food and gift shops, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo hosts a successful giraffe breeding program, with about 199 births recorded since 1954.

Garden of the Gods - In Colorado Springs is a public park designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1971. It covers an area of 1,367 acres, consisting of red rock formations that were created millions of years ago during a geological upheaval along a fault line. The area was hence called the Red Rock Corral, until two surveyors explored the site in August 1859 and called it the Garden of the Gods for the impressive rock formations.

Denver Art Museum - One of the largest art museums between the West Coast and Chicago is located in Denver's Civic Centre. Denver Art Museum, or DAM, is known for its large collection of over 68,000 artwork from different periods of time and from all over the world, including an impressive collection of American Indian art.

Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center - The centre, as the name suggest, is a museum dedicated to dinosaurs and fossils. It houses mounted dinosaur skeletons and other interesting fossils, as well as a fossil preparation lab and a gift shop. The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center is located in Woodland Park.

How to get around within Colorado

Travelling around Colorado is easier by renting a vehicle. The legal driving age in the state is 17 for an unrestricted licence. However, drivers under 18 cannot have passengers under the age of 21 unless it is an immediate family member, or until he or she has had his or her licence for over six months. Driving between 12 midnight and five in the morning is also prohibited for drivers under 18. There is also a bus service that runs on regular schedules. Fares are reasonably-priced. Colorado is also served by taxi and shuttle services.
