Tajikistan, officially the Republic of Tajikistan, in Central Asia is a mountainous landlocked country bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. With an area of 143,100 square kilometres or 55,300 square miles, it is the smallest Central African nation by area, and more than 90% of Tajikistan is covered by mountains of the Pamir range. The country’s capital and largest city is Dushanbe.

Where to go

Domestic flights available from Tajikistan’s main airport fly to Khorog and Khujand. Khorog (or Khorugh) is the capital of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Province, as well as the Shughnon District of Gorno Badakhshan in Tajikistan. The city is known for its beautiful poplar trees that dominate the flora of Khorog. A museum and the second highest botanical garden in the world can be found in Khorog. The city is also known for the location of highest altitude, where the sport bandy has been played. Hot springs can be found in the Julandee area, and behind the springs is an ideal climbing spot.

Khujand is the second largest city in Tajikistan. It is also the capital of the northernmost province of Sughd. One of the oldest cities in Central Asia, Khujand was an important city on the ancient Silk Road. Visit the cultural sites in the city, including the Khujand Fortress and the Historical Museum of Sughd, which displays around 1,200 exhibitions. On the main square across the Panjshanbe Market (one of the largest covered markets in Central Asia) is the Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum.
