The Proserpine/Whitsunday Coast Airport is a public air hub located approximately 9.3 kilometres from the city centre of Proserpine. It is the main gateway for travellers to and from the Whitsunday Islands, and has flights to cities such as Brisbane and Sydney. It is elevated at 82 feet, with two functioning runways. In the year ending June 30, 2011, the airport handled 213,619 passengers, making it the 27th busiest airport in Australia.
The airport was constructed in 1946, after almost a decade of waiting for adequate funds. In 2001, the airport suffered heavily from the collapse of Ansett Australia, who was at the time the biggest operator in Proserpine and has served direct services to Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, while on the side operating seasonal flights to Gold Coast and Adelaide. And by 2014, the local council has announced that it was to discuss with the Queensland state government the process for designating the airport precinct a Priority Development Area, making the future process of beefing up the airport facilities easier.
Where to go
From the Whitsunday Coast Airport, travellers may fly to Brisbane and Sydney, two key cities in Australia. Previously, the airport also offers flights to Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Adelaide, although due to the collapse of Ansett Australia, the final three routes were slashed off the roster. Currently, Jetstar Airways, Tigerair Australia, and Virgin Australia operate flights in the airport.
Aside from the three domestic routes mentioned, there are no short-haul flights available from the airport. Travellers may, however, seek other airports in Queensland to fly to short-haul destinations. Suggested airports include Brisbane Airport, Gold Coast Airport, and many others.
Similarly, there are no long-haul flights available from the airport. Travellers are better off checking flights from the main international airports in the country, including the Sydney Airport, Darwin International Airport, Melbourne Airport, Brisbane Airport, Perth Airport, Adelaide Airport, Canberra International Airport, Hobart International Airport, and many others.
How to get out
To get out of Proserpine, travellers are advised to take flights from the Whitsunday Coast Airport, and fly to key cities such as Brisbane and Sydney, then fly to the desired destination. Check first the availability of flights as some airports and airlines only offer routes during particular seasons.
