Mongolia is the second largest landlocked country in the world, located in east-central Asia. It is completely surrounded by Russia to the north and by China to the east, south, and west. The capital and largest city of Mongolia is Ulaanbaatar, also known as Ulan Bator. 

 

Where to go

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park - Mongolia's Gorkhi-Terelj National Park includes a protected zone in the Töv Province. A small part of the southern area of the park has been developed for tourists: offering shops, restaurants, camps, and horses and camels for rent. Some examples of the notable attractions in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park are the natural hot springs called Yestii Hot Watersprings, Khagiin Khar Lake, a Buddhist monastery, and interesting rock formations for rock climbers. 

 

Erdene Zuu Monastery - The Erdene Zuu Monastery is said to be perhaps the earliest survivng Buddhist monastery in the country. It is located in Övörkhangai Province, a couple of kilometres north-east from the centre of Kharkhorin. 

 

Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan - The Winter Palace is a complex that contains six temples. It is the only surviving palace of the four residences of the eighth Jebtsundamba Khutughtu (spiritual heads of the Gelug lineage of Tibetan Buddhism), who was later enthroned as Bogd Khan. The palace now serves as a museum that displays many of the Bogd Khan's possesions, including his throne, ornate ceremonial gear, and even his collection of art and stuffed animals.

 

National Museum of Mongolia - Formerly the National Museum of Mongolian History, the National Museum of Mongolia is located in Ulaanbaatar. The museum prides itself as a cultural, scientific, and educational organization, with exhibitions on prehistory, pre-Mongol Empire history, the Mongol Empire, ethnographic collections, and the twentieth-century history. 

 

It only takes a couple of hours to fly from Mongolia's major international airport to Beijing, China, where you can visit other temples and palaces such as the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, and Yonghe Temple. For more modern attractions, go to Seoul, South Korea and visit the large amusement park called Lotte World, or shop your heart out at the well-known shopping centres Myeongdong, Dongdaemun, and Itaewon, among other places. 

 

If you'd like to see beautiful old European buildings, travel to Moscow, Russia and visit the Moscow Kremlin, Saint Basil's Cathedral, Bolshoi Theatre, or the former royal estate called Kolomenskoye. There are many other tourist spots as well in Singapore, with well-known attractions and destinations such as Jurong Bird Park, Singapore Zoo, Universal Studios Singapore, and of course, the rest of Sentosa island resort.

The largest international aviation facility in Mongolia is Chinggis Khaan International Airport, located 18 kilometres southwest of Ulaanbaatar. There are regular flights from Chinggis Khaan International Airport provided by Aero Mongolia, Aeroflot, Air China, Hunnu Air, Korean Air, MIAT Mongolian Airlines, and Turkish Airlines to the airports in the following cities: Altai, Bayankhongor, Choibalsan, Dalanzadgad, Hohhot, Irkutsk, Khovd, Ölgii, Ovoot, Oyu Tolgoi, Ulaangom, Uliastai-Donoi, Moscow, Beijing, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Manzhouli, Mörön, Tsogttsetsii, Shanghai, Seoul, Berlin, Erenhot, Sheremetyevo, Singapore, Tokyo, Bishkek, and Istanbul.
