The Falkland Islands is a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The archipelago of the Falkland Islands is made up of East Falkland, West Falkland, and 776 smaller islands. The country’s capital and largest settlement is Stanley, located on East Falkland. The archipelago lies on the boundary of the subantarctic oceanic and tundra climate zones. The Falkland Islands is an ideal birdwatching site due to its large bird populations. The islands are also a fishing, sheep farming, and tourism spot. 

 

Where to go

Port Stanley Airport, located 3.2 kilometres or two miles outside Stanley, Falkland Islands, is the country’s only civilian airport with a paved runway. Port Stanley Airport has domestic flights between the East Falkland and West Falkland, as well as flights between the Falkland Islands and Antarctica. Travelling between the islands is via the Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS). RAF Mount Pleasant also serves unscheduled flights between Stanley and other settlements on the islands, also via FIGAS.

Exploring the wildlife of the Falkland Islands from October to March (summer) will be an amazing experience. A biogeographical part of the mild Antarctic Zone, the country has strong connections to the flora and fauna of Patagonia in mainland South America. The Falkland Islands is home to 63 species of land birds, including 16 endemic species. Marine mammals, such as the southern elephant seal and the South American fur seal, are also attractions as they frequent the islands, along with the rare striated caracara and some endemic fish. 

 

From RAF Mount Pleasant, short-haul destinations that can be reached from the Falkland Islands are Punta Arenas and Santiago in Chile, and Rio Gallegos in Argentina. Rio Gallegos, the capital and largest settlement of the Santa Cruz province in Argentina, is rich in fascinating wildlife. The city is home to

birds such as thrush, rhea, chingolo, Chilean flamingo, upland goose, and black-necked swan. Grey foxes and guanaco can also be found here. On the outskirts of the city, a wide variety of native plants can be seen such as calafates, anartrofilos, oxalis, violets and pansies, paper flowers, calceolarias, hipoqueris, leucerias, perezias, senecios, amancay, and lilies. Other points of attraction in Rio Gallegos are the Museo de Arte “Eduardo Minnicelli,” the Pioneer Museum, and the Kirchner Mausoleum. 

 

Long-haul destinations that can be reached from RAF Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands include Oxford and London in the United Kingdom, and Sal in Cape Verde. Sal Island in Cape Verde is home to the main airport of the country, Amilcar Cabral International Airport. The island is known for the salt mines at Pedra de Lume (Sal means “salt” in Portuguese). Pedra de Lume has salt evaporation ponds built over a natural salt lake. Sal also features sandy beaches, the most popular of which is the beach resort of Santa Maria.

RAF Mount Pleasant, also known as Mount Pleasant Airport, Mount Pleasant Complex, or MPA, is a Royal Air Force station in the Falkland Islands that serves as the country’s main international airport. It is located 48 kilometres or 30 miles southwest of Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands. RAF Mount Pleasant handles scheduled flights to Punta Arenas, Rio Gallegos, and Santiago via LAN Airlines; and RAF Brize Norton in Oxford via Royal Air Force operated by AirTanker. The airport also serves unscheduled flights to London and Sal via Hi Fly.
