Airfare hack: Choosing the right layover could save you more than 50% on flights!

Latest analysis of flight booking data by Skyscanner Australia, adding just one layover can result in savings of up to 50% to popular destinations for Aussie travellers.

October 2017 – It is no secret that every traveller loves a good deal, apart from booking early or finding the best time to book, experts from Skyscanner share a lesser known airfare hack to help travellers find the best deals – finding the right layover airports.

A layover refers to the connection period between two destinations, ranging from 30 minutes to less than 24 hours.

For Melbournians travelling to Manila, study revealed that a layover via Singapore can save them up to $359! This is a great chance for travellers to explore and enjoy the amazing amenities of the world famous Changi airport.

For Sydneysiders heading to London, Skyscanner also found that by making a pit-stop at Delhi airport could save them a massive 64% on average (up to $1,072).

On top of cost savings, a layover is also a great way for Aussies to explore more than one destination without much additional cost. Given that many airports now provide free city tours for travellers with long connecting flights, this is a great chance to sight-see another destination for free.

You can also turn a layover into a stopover (staying longer than 24 hours in a city). Skyscanner has pieced together a step-by-step guide on how to turn your layover into a stopover to maximise the your holiday as you explore two destinations for the price of one.

We’ve also compiled a list of cheapest layovers departing from Sydney and Melbourne, so Aussies can bag a flight that really is as cheap as chips:
