Driving in Mykonos
The important thing to realise when you rent a car in Mykonos is that you won't be able to drive it around the downtown area except to get to and from destinations outside of the downtown area. That's because downtown Mykonos is a pedestrians-only zone. Therefore, it's important to identify your parking places near where you're staying in Mykonos and keep your rental car there except when you're driving outside of downtown to the airport, ferries, or more rural parts of the island.
The standard driving speed limits in Mykonos are approximately 31 MPH in built up places, 74 on motorways, and 68 MPH on all other open roads. All cars must be carrying a warning triangle, first aid kit, and fire extinguisher. An international driving permit is not necessary to drive on Mykonos or anywhere else in Greece as long as you hold a valid driver's licence from your home country and proper photo ID.
Parking in Mykonos
There are many public parking lots where you can park your car rental in Mykonos, including City Parking Mykonos and Parking Lot Mykonos, both on the western waterfront, not far from the airport. There are a few other lots near the port and the southern end of downtown.
Where to Go and What to See in Mykonos
Once you pick up your car rental in Mykonos you're free to drive around the island. It's only 33 square miles in all, but there's a lot to see in that area. You can also take your car hire from Mykonos on a ferry, and in 2 - 5 hours you'll arrive in Athens, giving you another part of Greece to drive around and explore. You can also take shorter ferry excursions with your rental car to some of the other closer islands.
