Car Hire in Johannesburg

This information is correct as of July 2015

Johannesburg, a city in development, is becoming a scene-stealer in the region. The cultural districts of Newtown and Braamfontein with their theatres, museums, and cafes make a pleasant diversion. The Inner City also went through a major improvement, with other landmarks showing off more attractions such as the Apartheid Museum.

Where to hire a car in Johannesburg

There are various companies offering car rental services, which you can check out before you arrive in the city. These include Avis, Sixt, among many other operators. You can negotiate with them about the rates and the type of car you will be needing upon arrival in Johannesburg. Look for those with a broad selection, so you can compare your choices and find the right type of car.

In terms of requirements, providers generally accept any valid driver's licence, as long as it bears your photograph and signature, with all the details and authentication in English. An international driver's licence might also be asked for, as well as a proof of insurance and other relevant papers. Be sure to confirm the requirements and look into the terms and conditions before finalising the agreement.

What to expect when hiring a car from Johannesburg

Going around via car often makes a convenient mode of transport, if venturing to destinations in and out of the city. Traversing through its roads is fairly easy and manageable, but you will need to plan your route and be prepared to perform defensive driving. A GPS device will also be useful, so you can navigate to your destination. You will pass a number of toll roads, though, such as N1, N2, and N17. The city is also contemplating whether to implement congestion charges, which can add to your expenses.

One-way streets can also be an issue if you do not have a reliable and detailed map. You will also have to contend with bicycles sharing the road, as well as dogs, chickens, and other livestock if you happen to venture to the provinces on a day trip. If you plan on staying in the city, you can find parking spaces on the street, but be sure to look for garages. Staying at a hotel offering available slots might also be a better option, so you can lessen your parking fees.
