There are two car hire companies based inside the airport terminal building at Santa Fe Airport; Hertz and Avis. Enterprise and Budget also offer car hire services from the airport and provide a meet and greet service, collecting passengers from the terminal and transporting them to their nearest car hire office.

Petrol Stations near Santa Fe Airport

If you need to return your hire car with a full tank of petrol, you’ll find a petrol station close to the airport on Paseo Real. It’s a Honstein Oil garage, three minutes’ drive from the airport.

Driving around Santa Fe Airport

Highway 599 is the main route travelling to and from the airport. It heads northeast, avoiding Santa Fe city centre to join route 285, which heads north to Tesuque and Pojoaque. Southbound, the 599 joins route 25, which heads east to Santa Fe, Pecos and Ribera, and southwest to Albuquerque.
Roads around New Mexico are generally well-maintained and signposted. You’re likely to experience some impressive vistas throughout your travels too. Roads off the big highways can be winding and slow going so always allow plenty of time for your journey. In rural areas, you’ll need to keep an eye out for animals in the road. Weather can be extreme in New Mexico with very hot summers and snowy winters so be sure that your car is equipped for the conditions.

Santa Fe city is around 20 minutes’ drive from Santa Fe Airport, taking route 599 north and then heading south on the 285. The downtown area of the city has a winding network of roads that is difficult to navigate. It’s a wise idea to park up on the outskirts and do your exploring on foot.

Santa Fe National Forest

Santa Fe National Forest is home to some of New Mexico’s tallest mountains. The park covers 1.6million acres and offers endless opportunities for hiking, horse riding, hunting, fishing and white water rafting. There are also Indian pueblos, Spanish missions and Indian ruins to explore nearby.
Santa Fe National Forest is just over an hour’s drive from Santa Fe Airport, taking route 599 south, the 24 east and then route 63 into the park. There are a number of car parks at trail starting points and picnic spots around the forest. It’s wise to check for up to date information on any park road closures before travelling.

Los Alamos

Los Alamos is a small town, famous for the Los Alamos National Laboratory where the first atomic bomb was created during the Second World War. The Bradbury Science Museum is a great place to learn about atomic energy, including the historical and social issues surrounding it. Close to the town there are lots of parks and hiking trails to explore too.
Los Alamos is around 45 minutes’ drive from Santa Fe Airport, taking route 599 north, the 285 north and then the 502 west. This last stretch of the journey is very scenic and there are viewpoints where you can stop along the way.
