Driving around Punta Cana Airport
Punta Cana Airport provides easy access to a number of routes around the island. There’s route 105 (or the Carretera Higuey Miches) which travels north from the airport along the eastern coast, route 106, which travels into the town of Higuey, and route 3, which heads west along the southern coast, through San Pedro de Macoris to Santo Domingo.
You can drive for up to three months in the Dominican Republic using just your standard UK driving license. Playa Los Corales
Playa Los Corales is another stunning beach along the eastern coast of the island. Visitors can watch local fisherman at work, enjoy some excellent seafood and try their hand at a selection of adventure activities. Snorkelling, speed boating, spa excursions and a trip to see sting rays can all be arranged.
It takes around 25 minutes to reach Playa Los Corales from Punta Cana Airport. Drivers should take route 105 from the airport and then turn off onto Avenida Barcelo.
Higuey is the nearest city to Punta Cana Airport and it gives visitors a taste of real, everyday life in the Dominican Republic. The city boasts some impressive architecture including the Basilica de Higüey, a place of pilgrimage with an elaborate interior.
It takes around 35 minutes to drive from Punta Cana Airport to Higuey. The most direct route takes route 3 west and then route 4 north. The city is relatively big so a good map or satellite navigation system would come in handy.
