Driving around Mackay Airport
The Bruce Highway (A1) passes near the airport. This is the main route connecting Queensland's coastal towns and cities. The highway runs from Brisbane in the south to Cairns in the north. The section of road around Mackay Airport is single-carriageway. Traffic in Australia drives on the left, just like in Britain, so that's one less thing to get used to. Getting to your destination
Sugar cane and coal mining are the biggest industries in sleepy MacKay. This tropical city has a good range of attractions to offer visitors: more than thirty gorgeous beaches are within an easy drive, and the art deco city centre has a good selection of bars. The marina is frequent starting point for boat trips to the Whitsunday Islands.
It takes just over ten minutes to drive into the centre of Mackay from the airport. Most of the hotels in the area have guest parking, although finding somewhere safe to leave your car isn't too tricky in the city.
An art deco main street and a wealth of independent stores lend an old fashioned charm to Proserpine. This is the main service town for the Whitsunday region and makes a great base for exploring northern Queensland.
If you can't find cheap flights to Proserpine you can fly to Mackay and drive. It only takes around 90 minutes to reach the town from Mackay Airport. Most hotels in Proserpine have car parking.
An up and coming tourist area, the Sarina region is known for its sugar distilleries, golf courses, and beautiful beaches. The fishing is good, too.
