Where to hire a car at Krabi Airport
There are a number of car hire companies operating at Krabi Airport, including Sixt, Budget, Hertz, National, Thai Rent a Car and Avis. They are located on the first floor of the international arrival hall in terminal 1, on the left hand side after you’ve cleared baggage claim and customs.
Petrol Stations near Krabi Airport
If you hire a car from Krabi Airport with a full to full fuel policy you will need to refuel it prior to dropping it off to avoid excess charges.
The nearest petrol station to Krabi Airport is a Shell garage on route 4. It is five minutes’ drive away turning left as you leave the airport. For drivers travelling in the opposite direction, there’s a Caltex service station, also on route 4, after about 10 minutes.
Driving around Krabi Airport
Krabi Airport sits on route 4, the main highway along this east coast of Thailand. Northbound it heads towards Krabi city and the region of Phang-Nga. Heading south and east it goes towards Trang and Phatthalung.
You’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Thailand. This is different from your standard international driving license and you’ll need to apply for the permit before leaving the UK. The permit will be valid for 12 months from the date of issue.
Roads in Thailand are not always well-marked and drivers are prone to making up their own rules so take care when driving. In contrast to driving in the UK where flashing your lights signifies giving way to another driver, in Thailand it tends to mean the driver doing the flashing is the one taking right of way.
Getting to your destination

The small city of Krabi is the capital of its province. It’s a base from which to explore the beautiful beaches along this stretch of Thailand’s coastline. The city itself has a laid back atmosphere with lots of cafes, backpacker hangouts and a range of international restaurants. There’s an outdoor, riverside market in the evenings and plenty of travel agencies at which to plan your excursions.
It takes just 15 minutes to get from Krabi Airport to Krabi city centre, taking route 4 north and then the 411. Krabi is a relaxed city with a small town feel. Roads are generally well-maintained and major attractions are well-signposted. Sometimes locals double-park on the streets so it is best to find a designated car park if you can, to avoid being blocked in.
Ao Nang Beach
The beautiful resort at Ao Nang Beach is a tourist paradise. There are great restaurants, lively nightlife and an idyllic, white sandy beach. Visitors can go scuba diving to discover the region’s colourful marine life, take a tour of local islands by speedboat, learn about Thai cuisine in the cookery school or go hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding countryside.
Ao Nang Beach is around 35 minutes’ drive from Krabi Airport, taking route 4 towards Krabi and then branching off onto route 4034. On busy days, it may be difficult to find a parking space close to the beach. However, if you’re prepared to do a little walking, there’s always a street parking spot to be had a little further away.
Than Bok Khorani National Park
Than Bok Khorani National Park is located north of Krabi Airport. Its waterfalls, mangroves and forests provide an abundance of scenic hiking trails. You can go snorkelling, kayaking or wildlife spotting and visit caves with prehistoric paintings.
Than Bok Khorani National Park is a 45 minute drive from Krabi Airport taking route 4 north. The park is open from 6am to 6pm every day and there is parking available at the park entrance.
