You need to book your car hire in advance, and they will meet you at the airport with your vehicle. On very rare occasions you can organise car hire upon arrival, although this will result in a wait.

Driving around Benbecula Airport
The roads around the airport are small single carriageways. Many roads in the Outer Hebrides are unsurfaced single tracks with passing places. Be prepared to pull in when you meet traffic. Livestock often wander onto the road too, so keep your speed to a minimum. The A865, which connects to North and South Uist, is the main road on the island.
Getting to your destination

The main village on Benbecula, Balivanich is an excellent base for your trip. There's a small but good range of shops, hotels, and places to eat. There are some fantastic coastal walks as well as some of the best snorkelling in the UK.
It only takes a minute to drive into Balivanich from the airport. There are a few car parks in the village and most of the hotels have places for guests to park.
The small village of Lochmaddy is the main port village, and has a small range of shops and a couple of hotels. It's a good base for exploring the island. From here you can discover North Uist's beautiful sandy beaches and nature trails.
It takes just over half an hour to drive to Lochmaddy from Benbecula Airport. Most of the roads on North Uist are single tracks, so take care. Most of the accommodation in the town has guest parking, although there are plenty of on-street spaces too.
The ferry terminal for South Uist has a few good shops and hotels. There are some interesting sites, including the largest religious statue in the British Isles and historic croft-houses. On sunny days the beaches are superb.
It takes about 45 minutes to drive to Lochboisdale from Benbecula Airport. You can find plenty of places to park on the street as well as in hotel car parks. Most of the roads on South Uist are single tracks, so exercise caution.
