Zanzibar Airport

The Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is the main airport in the Zanzibar Archipelago, located on Unguja Island. It is found five kilometres south of Zanzibar city, the capital of Zanzibar. It was previously known as Kisauni Airport and Zanzibar International Airport, before being renamed to its current name in 2010 in honour of Abeid Amani Karume, the island's first president. It is operated and owned by the Zanzibar Airports Authority.

The airport has two terminals, aptly named terminals 1 and 2. Terminal 1 is considered as the old terminal building, designed as such to fit in the local architectural scene. Terminal 2 is the newer terminal, constructed in 2011 and completed in 2014. The 70-million-dollar second terminal has the capacity to serve up to 1.5 million passengers per year, with a new apron to match the huge capacity. The apron, estimated to be as big as 100,000 square metres, will replace the existing 21,000-square-metre apron.

The airport resides at an elevation of 54 feet above mean sea level. It has one asphalt runway with the direction of 18/36, which measures 9,895 feet.
