Tulita / Fort Norman Airport

The Tulita Airport is a public-type airport operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories. It runs domestic flights from several local airlines, along with cargo operations through its small airport terminal. The Tulita Airport is located 2 kilometres adjacent to the city of Tulita in Northwest Territories, Canada. Tulita is a hamlet in the Sahtu Region, formerly known as Fort Norman, located at the junction of the Great Bear River and the Mackenzie River. The hamlet is forested and well south of the tree line. The Tulita Airport was previously known as the Fort Norman Airport, following suit with the name change of the city it serves. It was in 1996 when it took on the name Tulita Airport.

The Tulita Airport has a small, single-storey terminal that handles all flights and related services. The said terminal, which measures 126 square metres, is operated by the local government and primarily used by the locals. The layout of the terminal takes the main look of the other airports in the Northwest Territories of Canada – traditional, cabin-like, and suited for any type of weather, especially winters. This design is also adapted in many places and airports in Canada, especially those that are located in the more remote areas.

Services and Facilities

The Tulita Airport was originally constructed in 1982, with its last listed minor overlay happening in 1997. It resides at an elevation of 329 feet or 100 metres above mean sea level, and is served by one paved gravel runway measuring 3934 by 98 feet. It is set at coordinates 64°54′35″ North and 125°34′10″ West, and has two paved stone apron run-up pads. Domestic services from the airport are provided by local airline North-Wright Airways, who run flights from Deline, Fort Good Hope, and Norman Wells. The Tulita Airport also provides cargo and freight services, as operated by Buffalo Airways. Majority of the airports in Canada run both commercial and scheduled flight services, along with cargo and freight services. Sometimes, other airports also offer scheduled charters, charter tours, and certain similar services.
