Vientiane Airport

Wattay International Airport, also known as the Vientiane Airport, is a small international airport located just about 3 km outside of the city centre of the capital, Vientiane. The airport is one of the few international airports found in Laos, along with Luang Prabang International Airport and Pakse International Airport.

Found in Sikhodtabong District, the airport is the head office of the Department of Civil Aviation in Laos, and is the primary hub for three Laos-based airline companies namely Lao Air, Lao Airlines, and Lao Central Airlines. The airport runs on a single asphalt runway with an elevation of 172 metres.

The airport's terminals are divided into domestic and international flight domains. The older and smaller terminal houses domestic air carriers including Lao Air, Lao Airlines, and Lao Central Airlines, with destinations such as Sam Neua, Sayaboury, Ban Houayxay, Louang Namtha, Luang prabang, Oudomxay, Pakse, Savannakhet, Sayaboury, and Xieng Khouang. Meanwhile, the newer and bigger terminal houses the International arm of Lao Airlines, as well as several international flight providers, such as Air Asia, Bangkok Airways, China Eastern Airlines, Jin Air, Sky Wings, Thai Smile, and Vietnam Airlines. Destinations include Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, China, and Vietnam.

Currently, the airport is working on the expansion of routes by partnering with other South-east Asian nations to further utilize the ASEAN pact. The ASEAN allow citizens from member countries to fly to their co-member countries without a visa. A similar pact is being utilized by Schengen member countries in Europe. Meanwhile, other countries, especially in South America, Europe, and Africa, similarly allow certain ally countries and their citizens to fly in for a certain period without visa. This is actually an additional convenience for travellers, especially when the country of origin is well-endowed and connected to other countries.

Services and Facilities

Like any other international airport, the Wattay International Airport provides its passengers certain services to make their travel convenient. Aside from passenger assistance and comfortable holding areas, the airport boasts of a competent team handling various operations in the airport, such as security, check-in, tour and travel information desks, and others. Aside from which, facilities in the airport include banks (local and international), bars, restaurants, a duty-free shop, a post office, retail shops, and internet cafe. The airport also has a bonded warehouse building for air cargo passing through the airport, as operated by Lao-Japan Airport Terminal Building Service Co. Ltd.
