Samui Airport

The Samui International Airport (USM) services the beautiful island of Koh Samui off the eastern coast of Thailand. This airport is owned and operated by Bangkok Airways, one of Thailand’s premier airline carriers, and is the only aviation facility on this popular island. Opened for business in 1989, this delightful regional airport is one of Thailand’s busiest, seeing around a million passengers each year, and as such it has a decent range of facilities despite its compact size.

Visitors to Koh Samui will find that the airport has a lovely open-air atrium, decorated with plush furniture and tropical plants, and is frequently cited as one of the prettiest airports in the world. There are restrooms, two Blue Ribbon Club lounges, and free WiFi throughout the terminals. You can pick up something to eat, and purchase a few souvenirs, but you’ll find the options are fairly limited, and generally passengers wait until they reach their destinations to shop and dine.

From cities in Australia, you can reach this gorgeous island by booking flights with Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways, Qantas, Malaysia Airlines, SilkAir, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Emirates and Singapore Airlines.

Travel Information

· The airport is only 3km from the most popular town on the island; Chaweng Beach on the eastern side of Koh Samui. Leave the airport and head south for about 2km, and you will come into the main avenue for Chaweng’s traffic, turn left, and you’ll be heading straight into town. Avis, Sixt, Hertz, Budget and Europcar operate out of Samui International Airport, but as this is a small facility, so it is advised that you book your vehicle online with Skyscanner's search tool so you can be assured of a car when you arrive.

· Public transportation isn’t extensive from this airport, and your main option will be mini bus services that are similar to shared-ride shuttle companies. The cost is cheap and cheerful, at 100-200THB ($4-8) per passenger, but the bus won’t depart until it is full. If you don’t want to wait, it may be easier to organise an airport transfer with Skyscanner’s search tool, so you can leave for your hotel as soon as you are ready.

· Taxis do service the airport, and most visitors will hail one of these to get to their accommodation. The price tends to hover around 500-1500THB ($20-60), as the fare is dependent on where in the island you want to go. You can look at a more detailed list of destination prices here.
