 Antananarivo Airport

The Ivato International Airport (TNR) is the principal aviation facility for international flight to and from Antananarivo. This city is the capital of Madagascar, so any traveller hoping to discover the charms of this incredible country will likely start their journey in this airport.

This is a very basic facility, and it is recommended that if you have any financial admin or any communication you need to make, that you do so before you depart for Madagascar, or when you arrive in one of its cities.

However, what you will find is a restaurant/café in each terminal (the domestic and the international), and here you can order drinks, hot meals, and snacks. There is a currency exchange service here too, and it is a good place to change over your money if you haven’t already.

There is a post office, and a tourist information desk that you can utilise. This second can also help you with transportation, dining, accommodation, and give you details on the local tourist attractions.

From Australia, flights to Antananarivo are operated by a number of carriers, and these tend to be Air Madagascar, Air Mauritius, South African Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Qantas.

Travel Information

·         The airport is roughly 30-40 minute drive away; you must get onto Lalana Dok. Joseph Raseta, and then turn left on Route 4. Turn left again onto Philibert Tsiranana Thruway, and then continue onto Rue Docteur Joseph Raseta to get to the city. To rent a car at this location, you have to book your vehicle online. There are advantages to booking remotely, primarily being able to compare prices, models, and companies easily.

·         You can take the Taxi-brousse from the airport; these are mini-buses, that function like shuttles. They can be quite crowded, but they are cheap with a standard fare being 400 MGA (20 cents). However, it might be preferable to book an airport transfer, as taking the mini-buses can be a little overwhelming for visitors the first time around.

·         A taxi into town will cost you about 50,000-70,000MAG ($21-30), and this is one of the most convenient ways to get into the city, expect the journey to take you about a half hour.
