Sofia Airport

The Sofia Airport (SOF) is the busiest, and largest airport in Bulgaria, and the key international hub for the country. You’ll find that this facility is the operations base for the flag carrying airline, Bulgaria Air, and the popular international low cost carriers, Ryanair and Wizz Air. There are two main terminals, which see around 5 million passengers annually, and operate flights to over 50 direct destinations.

You will be able to transit between the terminals via a free shuttle service, and take advantage of a number of facilities within the airport. These include financial amenities like bureau de change counters, full-service banks, and cash machines you can access. There is a free WiFi service that passengers may utilise for entertainment or communication pre- or post-flight.

If you’re travelling with family, you’ll be able to use the children’s play area, or if you have any health concerns there are medical services available. For hungry travellers, there are eateries in both terminals, with the newer Terminal 2 housing more options, but you will be able to pick up snacks, drinks, and hot meals whilst you’re in transiting through either terminal. There is also a duty-free section where you can pick up gourmet food goods, tobacco, alcohol, cosmetics, fragrances and various travel accessories.

From Australia to Bulgaria’s capital of Sofia, you will likely find flights with airlines like Emirates, Qantas, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Air Serbia, Singapore Airlines, Swiss Air, and Bulgaria Air.

Travel Information

·         To get into the city, you need to get onto Brukser Street, and then turn onto the Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard. The journey should only take you 20 minutes in a car, and you can rent one online with our search tool, or within the airport’s terminals when you arrive.

·         The city’s Metro is connected directly to the airport, and can take you straight into the city centre in under 20 minutes and for 1.60BGN ($1.10).

·         Passengers can also take the bus, which is slightly cheaper than the Metro, but takes double the time. Expect a journey into the city to take roughly 40 minutes.

·         Otherwise, you can take transport in the form of taxis, which will charge you around 10-15BGN ($7-10) for the convenience. You can also organise a private airport transfer that can meet you when you arrive.
