Sliac Airport

The Sliac Airport is a public-slash-military airport operated by Letisko Sliac a.s. It is situated between the towns of Zvolen and Banska Bystrica, near the spa town of Sliac. It stands at an elevation of 1,043 feet, and is mainly serving the town of Sliac. The Sliac Airport, also known as the Tri Duby Airport (literally, Three Oaks Airport), played an important role during the Slovak National Uprising in 1944. It became the most important airport of the Anti-Nazi Resistance in Slovakia, and has been used as the main base of the Slovak Insurgent Air Force. While the territory was controlled by the Slovak rebels, it was being encircled then by the hostile German forces, due to its role as one of the two main gateways of Slovakia to the world (the other being the nearby and defunct Zolna Airport). Until the end, the Slovak rebels did not release the airport facility to the Germans. In addition to being of service to the Soviet republic and Slovakia, the airport was also used by the American forces as a channel where they can send supplies and operatives. By 1945, the airport was renamed to Sliac Airport. Just recently (2009), the airport was closed for a major reconstruction project financed both by the NATO and the EU. It was re-opened for military use in May 2011, and for civilian use in June 2011. Though considered as an international airport in central Slovakia, the airport does not currently have regular flights and only mainly operates scheduled charters.

The airport has one functioning terminal that handles all charter and general aviation services. Since regular flights are inactive, activities within the airport are more or less limited.

Services and Facilities

Apart from the newly refurbished and reconstructed terminal, the airport has a single concrete runway measuring 7,678 feet. It also handles charter flights and sports aviation, military flights, freight transport, and flight training services. Military flights are also hosted in the airport.
