Thessaloniki Airport

Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG)

The Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG) is an important Greek hub, not least because it served the second largest city in the country. This airport welcomes in flights from all over the world, and handles up to five million travellers annually. This is the major facility for the north of Greece, and you can fly to at least 40 destinations directly.

There have been flights departing from this airport since World War 1, but luckily you’ll find that the facilities here have been updated since the early 19th century. You will find that there are several bars and restaurants that you can grab a bite to eat in when you arrive, and there is a duty-free section where you can pick up souvenirs, as well as favourites like alcohol, tobacco, fragrances and perfumes.

You can access standard amenities as well, like free WiFi, so you can stay connected to friends or family, or contact your hotel when you arrive. And there are also banking facilities, like cash machines, and a bureau de change service you can use upon arrival.

Flights out to Greece from Australia are often operated by airlines like Thai Airways, Etihad Airways, Austrian Airlines, Aegean Airlines, Qantas, EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines, and Singapore Airlines.

Travel Information

·         To get into town, the most straightforward way is to hop on EO Aerodromiou Thessalonikis, then merge onto the A/D Thessalonikis Neon Moudanion/A25. Continue on this road and you’ll find yourself in the centre of town. Book your car online with Skyscanner so you’re sure of a reservation when you arrive, or hire one at the airport once you disembark from your flight.

·         You can take a bus from the airport into town, the Route 78, which operates every 45 minutes, and costs 0.60EUR (85 cents). You should be in the downtown area within the hour. Otherwise, consider booking an airport transfer through Skyscanner's search engine, especially if you are carrying a lot of luggage, or travelling with family.

·         For a taxi, you should be prepared to pay between 15-20EUR ($22-29), but you can expect this to be a quick journey in, roughly 20 minutes.
