San Jose Juan Santamaria Airport

Serving the capital of Costa Rica, the vibrant city of San Jose, the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) is the primary aviation hub for the country. The airport is named for the nation’s national hero, Juan Santamaria, a famed soldier who sacrificed himself in the Second Battle of Rivas. This facility is one of the busiest in Central America, and can see up to five million people travel through its terminal buildings.

Travellers passing through this hub will find that they have access to over 40 direct destinations, as well as a decent range of amenities within the airport itself. There is free WiFi access throughout the airport, and a couple of Kölbi counters that can set you up with a mobile with a data plan if you are staying in Costa Rica. There are ATMs and currency exchange services if you need to take out, or change over, your cash.

There are good dining options at Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), with a food court, sit-down restaurants, bars, and coffee kiosks all at your disposal. You’ll also be able to pick up gifts and souvenirs at several shops within the terminal buildings, and there are duty-free outlets where you can purchase cosmetics, alcohol, tobacco, confectionary, and fragrances. There are also lounges, public telephones, a pharmacy, and hotels in and around the airport.

To fly to San Jose from Australia, you can travel with a number of airlines, including Qantas, American Airlines, United, Alaska Airlines, Air New Zealand, Hawaiian Airlines, COPA, Air Canada, and Delta, among others.
