Istanbul Sabiha Airport

The Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) is one of two international airports serving the city of Istanbul, located on the Asian side of the city, with the Istanbul Ataturk International Airport (IST) located on the European side. The Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) is the smaller of the two, but even so passengers can connect directly to over 100 cities.

This airport has one spacious terminal, split into Domestic and International sections. There are ATMs, a full service bank, and a currency exchange accessible in the International side of the terminal. There is WiFi available, but only at designated hot spots, and charged at a fee. Other amenities include a Medical Clinic offering first aid services, a pharmacy, prayer rooms, a hair salon, a post office and VIP lounges.

In terms of eating, there are lots of restaurants and food concessions available to passengers, serving both Turkish cuisine and international options. There is also an excellent duty-free shop, and a bunch of other retailers selling gifts, souvenirs, reading materials, snacks, and a number of travel accessories.

Flights to Istanbul from Australia are generally operated by Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad, and Garuda Indonesia.

Travel Information

·         The airport is 60km from central Istanbul, and so to get to the more traditional side of the city, you must get on the E80 and continue on this road right into Istanbul. There are a good variety of international and local car rental agencies operating out of this airport, and you can approach these agencies when you arrive, or compare their prices online with Skyscanner.

·         There are buses that can take you into the city, and these are pretty cheap with fares ranging between 8-12TRY ($3-4) and can take you into the more central part of the city—Taksim Square—or our to the Kadıköy ferry dock. If you’d like door-to-door service but don’t want to spend money on a cab, then we suggest reserving a private airport transfer online and in advance.

·         Because this airport is a ways out of the city centre, the taxi price is accordingly high. Expect the fare to start at around 85TRY ($31) but can go as high as 120TRY ($44).
