Shanghai Pudong International Airport

Shanghai Pudong International Airport is a public-type airport and the primary international airport serving Shanghai, a major city in China. It is located 30 kilometres east of the city centre, occupying a 40-square-kilometre site adjacent to the coastline in eastern Pudong. The airport is operated by the Shanghai Airport Authority, and serves as the main hub for numerous airlines, including Air China, China Cargo Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, and many more.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport, or informally Pudong Airport, is a fast-growing hub and a state-of-the-art facility for both passenger and cargo traffic. With some three million metric tonnes of cargo handled in 2010, the airport was named as the world's third busiest airport by cargo traffic. It also served some 51 million passengers in 2014, making it the third busiest airport in mainland China and 19th busiest in the world. Pudong Airport is also known as the busiest international airport in mainland China, with 50% of its total passenger traffic listed as international. As of this day, some 87 airlines operate from the airport, flying to 194 destinations worldwide. By the end of 2015, it is expected that the airport expansions will be completed, and is also expected to double the airport's capacity as of the moment.

One of the most impressive pieces of architecture in China, Shanghai Pudong International Airport has two main terminals along with four operational runways, 70 boarding bridges, and 218 parking positions for aircraft. Terminal 1, which was opened in 1999, was built to handle the demand for traffic and relieve the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport traffic. Terminal 1 is shaped like Kansai International Airport's terminal, but a bit shorter with only 28 gates (13 of which are double-decker gates). The exterior of the terminal, meanwhile, is shaped like waves. 20 million is the maximum capacity of the airport. On the other hand, Terminal 2 was opened in March of 2008, which gives a capacity of at least 60 million passengers and 4.2 million tonnes of cargo every year. It is mainly served by Air China and Star Alliance members, but Oneworld and SkyTeam airlines also operate out of the terminal. A separate cargo hub can also be found in the Terminal 1 area.

Services and Facilities

Shanghai Pudong International Airport operates at an elevation of four metres or 13 feet above mean sea level. It has four functional concrete runways, measuring 13,123 feet, 12,467 feet, 11,155 feet, and 12,467 feet long respectively. A fifth runway is built at 11,155 feet although it is not yet functional. Apart from providing commercial flight services, the airport also has several facilities and airport services that can be used by its visitors and passengers. Some of them include the inquiry counters, aid for passengers with special needs, business centres complete with banks, ATMs, and other necessities; luggage storage facilities, lost and found desks, luggage carts, temporary boarding certificate desks, electric vehicles, delivery services, aviation insurance facilities, and others. The airport also has its own post office, vending machines, power chargers, photo kiosks, to name some. Further, the airport is also very much connected to the city via public transport services. Car rental services, separate railway lines, dedicated airport buses, taxi services, and others, can all be accessed through the airport to connect passengers to the city and vice-versa.
