 Port Moresby Airport

Jacksons International Airport, also known as Port Moresby Airport, is the largest and busiest airport in Papua New Guinea. It is located five miles (8km) outside Port Moresby. It’s owned by PNG National Airports Corporation Ltd and operated by PNG National Airports Corporation Ltd. It is the primary hub for Air Niugini, the national airline, as well as Airlines PNG. It replaced the original Port Moresby Airport, now the suburb of Waigani. The airfield used to be a World War II military airfield complex. In 1940, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) built a runway in recognition of the city’s strategic importance during the war in the Pacific. The airstrip of the original runway was upgraded during World War II and two additional runways were added by the United States Air Force. The existing terminal building being used today was constructed in 1959, while a concrete, apron, and parallel taxiway were completed in 1963. The airport offers regular domestic flights between Port Moresby and Lae, the only feasible way of travelling between. Aside from international and domestic flights, the airport also offers helicopter charter services for travel to remote locations.

Terminals

Port Moresby Airport is comprised of two terminals, the Domestic Terminal and the International Terminal, connected by a covered walkway. Air Niugini and Airlines PNG utilise the Domestic Terminal, while all other airlines, including Air Niugini and Airlines PNG aircraft serving international routes operate at the International Terminal. Four aircraft parking bays are housed in the International Terminal, two of which are equipped with aerobridges. Some of the local destinations that Air Niugini serve are Alotau, Buka, Daru, Goroka, Hoskins, Kavieng, Kerema, Kiunga, Kundiawa, Lae, Lihir Island, Lorengau, Madang, and Mendi. Sunstate Airlines-operated QantasLink offers flights between Port Moresby and Cairo, Egypt while Virgin Australia offers flights to and from Brisbane. Air Niugini’s international destinations include Brisbane, Cairns, Cebu, Denpasar/Bali, Hong Kong, Honiara, Manila, Nadi, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo-Narita.

Both terminals have rental car areas where you can choose from a number of trusted rental car companies.
