Port Hedland, a coastal town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia has seen a huge boom in the mining industry, and as a result the Port Hedland Airport (PHE) has seen a number of upgrades as the major transit hub for this town. With around half a million passengers flying in and out of Port Hedland, this airport has increased the number of flights and destinations it offers. · Exploring the Pilbara region is best done via car, and reserving a vehicle is easily done online, or at the airport, with Core Fleet, Europcar, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Hertz and Avis all operating out of Port Hedland Airport. Driving to the city should only take about 10-15 minutes as the airport is situated 13km away from the centre. Head north on the National Highway 1, and exit on the right onto Wilson Street. Follow this for 9km, and turn right onto Short Street, then left on Anderson Street, and another right onto Howe to get to the downtown area.

· Some hotels offer complimentary airport transfers, so it is worth double checking with the place you are staying if you don’t intend to hire a car during your stay. Otherwise, you can organise an airport transfer ahead of time through Skyscanner’s online search tool.

· Taxis are available from the airport and you can take one into Port Hedland from the taxi zone located in the short-term car park. Expect the journey to cost around $50 all in.
