Panama City Bay County Airport

When visiting Panama City in the state of Florida, one of the usual options for air travel is Bay County International Airport. It lies three miles away from the city, but was closed down in late 2010 due to the lack of space for expansion plans. The area was also deemed to be better off for constructing homes, shops, and walking trails, as well as a marina for the boats on North Bay. This makes it necessary for travellers planning to visit the area to look for alternative airports. One of the options to consider is Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, a public airport 18 miles northwest of Panama City. It was designated to be the replacement of the Bay County Airport.

Founded as a private field by J.B. Atkinson, Jr., Bay County Airport stood at 292 acres of land with grass landing strips. Mr Atkinson and his wife then donated the property to the Panama City Chamber of Commerce, so a port of entry to the city can be established. The airport developed through the years, although it faced issues such as few destinations and passengers. Renovation, however, followed in 1995 when an on-call customs and immigrations facilities were established, making the airport in Panama City an international port of entry. The airport was also declared as a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) then, which allows for special customs procedures that treat domestic activities involving foreign items to be treated as though they were outside of U.S. Customs territory.

In its heyday, Bay County Airport had one terminal with six gates, two of them with jet bridges. It also had a passenger hold room, a number of ticketing counters, airline office space, and other facilities. Flight services include Delta Connection Us Airways Express, and Northwest Airlink.

Services and Facilities

Lack of information and the airport's permanent closed status makes one unable to determine what passenger facilities were offered in the airport then. There were, however, public and rental car parking lots, which accounted for some of the ground transport in the area.
