Pitu Airport is a public, medium-sized airport on the southern coast of Morotai Island in North Maluku, Indonesia. Operated by the Government of Indonesia, the airport resides at an elevation of 49 feet or 15 metres above mean sea level and can be located on the map with the coordinates 02°02′45.76″N 128°19′29.28″E (2.044475 latitude; 128.32143 longitude).

Morotai Island, a rugged, forested island north of the Halmahera group of the Maluku Islands (Moluccas) in eastern Indonesia, is one of the country’s northernmost islands. The island covers an area of approximately 1,800 square kilometres or 690 square miles, extending some 80 kilometres or 50 miles north-south, and up to 42 kilometres or 26 miles wide. The largest settlement on Morotai Island is Daruba, located in the south coast. Almost all of the villages in the island are located on the coast, linked by a paved road. Those exploring Morotai Island will see some old World War II wrecks, and the Museum Perang Dunia ke2 (World War II Museum) at Pelabuhan Ferry that displays artefacts and murals.

Services and Facilities

Pitu Airport operates with two asphalt-surfaced runways; runway 09/27 is 7,875 feet or 2,400 metres long, while runway 09R/27L is 7,795 feet or 2,423 metres long. It was initially built as a bomber airfield to the north inland in the 1940s. Today, it is used as a commercial airport. However, there is no information found regarding Pitu Airport’s services, aside from the occasional landings here of small planes coming from Ternate. Babullah Airport in Ternate, North Maluku, Indonesia is served by the airlines Batik Air, Express Air, Garuda Indonesia, Sriwijaya Air, Wings Air, and Susi Air, which fly between local destinations in Indonesia.

Other means of getting in to and out of Morotai Island include an overnight boat that connects Daruba to Ternate, as well as small boats that travel between Tobelo and Daruba.
