Chicago O'Hare International Airport

Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)

The Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is one of two major airports serving the city of Chicago, but it is the premier facility of Chicago, and a major regional hub for the country. This is a well-equipped airport that is almost finished with a long-term modernisation development worth billions of dollars so that the facility can better handle its annual passenger load of around 75 million.

There are four terminals in this airport, and there is a 24 hour operating light rail system that offers free transport between them.

You’ll find lots of amenities here, with information desks, ATMs, foreign exchange services, a medical centre, business facilities, charging stations, a spa, and executive lounges. There are great communication features here, with comprehensive WiFi access throughout the terminals, and public telephones.

In terms of shopping you can access bookstores, designer retailers, entertainment outlets, and duty-free sections. The only area where the shopping is outpaced in this airport is through its dining options. You can access food of all kinds, and through fast food outlets, sit-down dining, chic bars, sports bars, grills, cafes, and sit-down restaurants. If you are feeling peckish or thirsty you will find plenty of ways to stem your appetite.

Connecting flights to the city of Chicago can be found on carriers like American Airlines, Delta, United, Qantas, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Air New Zealand, Asiana, Hawaiian Airlines, and JAL.

Travel Information

·         If the traffic is light, you should be able to make the 27km journey in about 20 minutes. Get on the I-90 E and continue on this road until you see the exit for Congress Parkway towards the Chicago Loop, and you’ll get into the centre of town. There are car hire companies within the airport, and most of the international brands are represented here. If you’d like to organise your vehicle to be ready for when you arrive, you can book one online with Skyscanner.

·         There is a light rail system run by the CTA, and you can get into central Chicago within 45 minutes and for less than 3USD ($4). There is also a faster rail service operated by the Metra Rail, and costs about 6USD ($8), but takes 35 minutes.

·         Buses and shuttles are another transport option, with the former being the cheapest way into the city—a fare comes to approximately 1.75USD ($2.30)—and the latter taking you door-to-door but costing upwards of 35USD ($47). You can also opt for an airport transfer that you can book online so you have someone waiting to pick you up when you arrive.

·         You can take a taxi just outside of the terminals, and though this is the most expensive option, it can be the most convenient if you aren’t keen on waiting for shuttles. The fare will hover around 40USD ($54) and take you around about half an hour into the city.
