Karamea Airport

Karamea Aerodrome is a non-certificated aerodrome that serves and is located in the town of Karamea, in the South Island of New Zealand. It is situated one nautical mile north of the town. The aerodrome is operated by Karamea Airport Inc and serves as a hub for Golden Bay Air. Built in 1940, it lies at an elevation of 97 feet or 30 metres above mean sea level and can be found on the map at these coordinates: 41°15′S 172°07′E.

The town of Karamea is located on the northernmost settlement on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Some of the scenic attractions in this part of the region include the Kahurangi National Park; the Heaphy Track, dubbed as one of the nine “Great Walks” in New Zealand; Wangapeka Track; the Oparara Basin with the Oparara Arches; Honeycomb Caves; and rainforest walks.

At present, the aerodrome is served by two airlines: Adventure Flights Golden Bay and Golden Bay Air. The former offers charter flights to local destinations, Takaka Aerodrome and Nelson Airport; while the latter offers scheduled passenger flights to Takaka Aerodrome and Wellington International Airport and charter flights to Nelson Airport. The airport has one bitumen-surfaced runway, directed 01/19, which measures 3,100 feet or 945 metres long. To reach other destinations, it is best to book a connecting flight to bigger airports, the closest of which is Nelson Airport, located six kilometres southwest of the city, in the suburb of Annesbrook, in Nelson, New Zealand. From Karamea, head north on Wharf Rd toward Quinlans Rd. Wharf Rd turns slightly left and becomes Karamea-Kohaihai Rd. Continue straight onto Aerodrome Rd and turn right to stay on Aerodrome Rd. The airport will be on the left.
