Noumea Tontouta Airport

The Noumea International Airport(NOU), also known as the La Tontouta International Airport, is the main aviation facility connecting the Oceanic archipelago of New Caledonia to the world. Once used as a US Army Air Force base, the airport now serves half a million passengers annually to destinations in Vanuatu, Japan, French Polynesia, Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand.

The airport is roughly 45km from the city of Noumea, but this is a direct shot to town, and should only take about 40 minutes of drive-time.

The facilities within the airport are a bit thin on the ground, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the amenities you can access. This includes free internet, available throughout the airport, and you can connect with your own mobile devices, as well as public telephone you can utilise. There is an ATM and a currency exchange to secure yourself some of the local currency if you haven’t got any with you.

There are two restaurants in the airport, as well as a snack kiosk where you can pick up a bite to eat after you land or before you depart. Duty-free is also available, and a few gift shops where you can purchase local goods.

There’s a small brochure stand that holds leaflets on the area and attractions, as well as disabled bathroom facilities, and baby change area.

The airlines that typically operate routes from Noumea’s airport are Air New Zealand, Qantas, Air Vanuatu, Aircalin and Qantas.

Travel Information

·         Get onto the Route Territoriale 1/RT1, and then get on the E2, a road that will take you right into the central part of town, along the main island’s southern coast. There are several car rentals just outside the terminal, and you can organise a rental right then and there, or compare and contrast prices in advance with Skyscanner.

·         There are public bus services and shuttle bus services which come to 500XPF ($6) and 3000XPF ($35) respectively. If you find arranging transport on a bus a little confusing, you can arrange a private airport transfer to meet you when you land.

·         Taxis are available, but they can be quite expensive; taking one the full distance between the airport and Noumea can cost 5000-12000XPF ($65-142).
