Newcastle International Airport, Newcastle, United Kingdom

Newcastle Airport (NCL) is one of the UK’s largest aviation hubs and services the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and its surrounding areas. Built in 1925 as an airfield for the Newcastle Aero Club, and having seen service as a base for the RAF in World War 2, this airport has a long and prestigious history. Today, it sees millions of passengers use its services each year, and offers routes to destinations all over the European continent, and further out to international hotspots like Dubai in the UAE, and Cancun in Mexico.

Within the airport you will find a great variety of amenities that will ensure that you find transiting through this facility a breeze. Shop in the World Duty Free shop, the electronic specialists, Dixons, the sports store, JD, or the popular pharmacy and cosmetics chain, Boots. For refreshments, you can pick up food and drink at the convenience store, M&S Food To Go, have a drink in Bar 11 or The Beer House, sip a coffee at Caffé Ritazza, or grab a burger at Burger King. There is also a large and well-equipped lounge if you have to wait in the airport for a prolonged period of time. Other facilities include an arcade, bureau de change counters, up to 45 minutes of free WiFi and access to cash machines.

Airlines that fly connecting routes to Newcastle Airport from Australia include Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, British Airways, Qatar Airways, KLM and Air France.

Travel Information

· Newcastle is only a 15 minute drive from the airport; all you need do is head southwest and at the roundabout take the second exit onto the A696. At the Kent Bar Roundabout, you should take the third exit onto Ponteland, continue on this road past two further roundabouts until you see the B1318 towards the city centre (north) which will take you into town. If you haven’t organised a vehicle already with Skyscanner’s search tool, there are several car hire agencies within the terminal, such as Interrent, Budget, Hertz, Avis and Europcar.

· There are lots of bus services that run between the city and the airport, look for the X77, X78, X79, the 353 or the 74 bus routes. You can purchase a Nexus card—the city’s smart travel card—and use it throughout the duration of your stay in the city. If you would like a ticket that can be used on all forms of public transport throughout the day, the fare comes to 7GBP ($12). Otherwise, private airport transfers are available with online booking.

· The train and metro services are the better option for direct transport into the city, as these run every 12 minutes directly from the airport and into Newcastle Central Station. The journey takes about 25 minutes and should cost between 2.50-5GBP ($4.30-8.60).

· A taxi only takes 15 minutes from the airport into the downtown area of Newcastle, and is a good option if you are travelling with your family or a lot of luggage. Expect a fare to come to approximately 20-30GBP ($34-52).
