Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, Maldives

Male Airport is the largest airport and primary international gateway to the Maldives. Its former name was Hulhule Airport, after the island it occupies. Its official name was changed to Ibrahim Nasir International Airport in 2011, in honour of the former president.

The airport is located six kilometres from the capital Male, although the majority of international arrivals take speedboats or seaplanes to reach resorts dotted around the atolls rather than staying in the city itself.

Due to space limitations on the island, Male Airport only uses a single runway. It has three terminals – an International Terminal, a Domestic Terminal and a dedicated Seaplane Terminal.

- The International Terminal hosts more than 30 airlines, including British Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and more carriers from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Many visitors come from even farther afield in Australasia and the Americas, catching connecting flights to Male from their home countries.

- The Domestic Terminal only serves flights with flyme and Maldivianto other airports around the island chain.

- The Seaplane Terminal handles Maldivian and Trans Maldivian Airways flights.

Male Airport is a modern facility that offers all the facilities travellers will need before or after a long flight. Dining options range from fast food chains and coffee shops to air-conditioned restaurants. The world-class duty-free shopping area offers discounts on prestigious brands like Elizabeth Arden and Estée Lauder.

If you need to freshen up after your flight, you can use a shower room free of charge (bring your own towel), and families with children are well catered for with care rooms and a 24-hour healthcare centre. If you need to get in touch with the world back home, you can connect at an internet kiosk.

Getting to Male and other destinations

There are no buses, taxis or trains to get you to Male, but there is a fast ferry. The Airport Ferry departs every 10 minutes during the day between 6.00am and 2.30am, every 30 minutes from 2.30am–4.00am and every 15 minutes from 4.00am–6.00am (service ends at midnight on Friday).

The journey only takes 10 minutes to reach Male. One-way tickets cost Rf.10 or US$1 by day, Rf.20 or US$2 by night.

Most package holidays in the Maldives include a complimentary speedboat transfer (unless you're staying too far from Male). A representative from your resort will meet you at the airport, or you can look for the boat with your resort's name on it at the jetty next to the terminal.

If you're staying far away from Male (or you just want to enjoy the aerial views), you'll need to travel by seaplane. Male Airport is the biggest seaplane hub in the world, with Trans Maldivian Airways and Maldivian Air Taxi flights connecting with popular destinations all over the Maldives.

Travelling by seaplane rather than speedboat cuts down journey times from three hours to just 30 minutes, but it's a more expensive option, with prices often starting at US$100.
