Mackay Airport (MKY) services one of the largest towns on Queensland’s breathtaking northern coast. The town of Mackay, as part of the Mackay-Whitsunday region, is perfectly located for anyone wanting to explore the central and northern shorelines of this sunny state, including the wonderful Whitsunday Islands. For many, flying to the Mackay Airport is the perfect gateway port for discovery trips to the UNESCO listed natural wonders of Australia, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.
Being a major tourist hub, the Mackay Airport strives to give the best service it can to the almost one million passengers that pass through its doors each year. The facilities here are very comprehensive, with cash machines, currency exchange booths, recharging areas, a parents’ room, a lovely observation area, and an information desk. In terms of food and drink, passengers will find two different cafes, and a fully licensed bar at your service. For shoppers, there is a Relay newsagents selling gifts, confectionary and reading materials, and a Tech 2 Go store stocked with travel accessories and electronics. You can also access the WiFi if you make a purchase inside the airport terminal for $12 or more.
Mackay Airport operates flights from a variety of major hubs in Australia; primarily these destinations are Rockhampton (ROK), Townsville (TSV), Brisbane (BNE), and Sydney (SYD). Airlines flying to Mackay are Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia.
· Hire a car from one of the six rental car agencies in the terminal, or online with Skyscanner. The companies operating in Mackay’s airport are Avis, Redspot, Budget, Thrifty, Hertz, and Europcar. To get to the city, you need only drive 5km by heading west on Boundary Road East, turn right onto Milton Street and continue past the first roundabout. At the second roundabout on Milton Street, take the third exit onto Victoria Street, and you will come to the centre of town.
· There are Greyhound bus services between the airport and Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays for $25, but these only come to the airport twice daily, in the mornings and evenings, and do not stopover in Mackay town centre. More personalised airport transfers can be arranged online, and booked in advance, which may make your transit quicker and easier.
