London Heathrow Airport

London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) is the premier international aviation hub in the United Kingdom. You’ll find that though London has five other airports—London Gatwick (LGW), London City (LCY), Southend (SEN), Stansted (STN), and Luton (LUT)—London Heathrow offers the most destinations, including the largest range of connecting flights, and serves as an important international hub for flights all over the world. Situated only 28km from central London, this airport has excellent and efficient transport links for arriving passengers, and plenty of facilities you can take advantage of.

Take care of all your banking needs using the ATMs and currency exchange services, communicate with your friends and family using the free WiFi, public telephones, or charge up your mobile device at the charging stations and call home. The shopping at Heathrow is also very impressive, with large and comprehensive duty-free stores selling cosmetics, spirits, confectionary and souvenirs. You will also find newsagencies, book stores, and designer retailers. Foodies will also love transiting through Heathrow, as you’ll find everything from wine bars, sushi trains, pubs, fine dining restaurants, popular fast-food outlets, and coffee houses you can relax in pre or post flight. Other facilities include prayer rooms, chapels, spas, showers and pharmacies.

There are no direct flights from Australia to London, but there are plenty of connecting flights that route through cities like Singapore (SIN) and Dubai (DXB). Look for flights with Qantas, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways, American Airlines, Air New Zealand, Etihad Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta, Air Canada, Japan Airlines, Air China, United, Virgin Australian, ANA, Garuda Indonesia, and ANA, among others.

Travel Information

· The journey will typically take about 45 minutes if you drive into central London. The route is pretty straightforward, just take the M4 to the Great West Road (A4). Stay on the A4, and take the S Carriage Drive to The Mall, to be directly in the centre of town. There are lots of car hire companies in London Heathrow, with major companies like Alamo, and Avis being represented. If you’d rather just have everything organised before you land, utilise Skyscanner's search tool to book a car, to save time and money.

· Trains are the fastest way into the city, and there are two options; you can take the Piccadilly Line on the city’s underground rail, with a single fare costing 5.70GBP ($11.50) and the journey to stations like Earl’s Court or Covent Garden taking 40-60 minutes. You can also hop on the Heathrow Express that will take you into Paddington Station in 15 minutes, and comes to 22GPB ($45).

· Buses and coaches also leave from Heathrow, and you can buy tickets from the Heathrow Bus Station. This is one of the slower ways into the city, but if you’d prefer to go via the road, it might be better to book an airport transfer online, so your transport is waiting for you when you arrive.

· Taxis are available outside all of Heathrow’s terminals, but they are very expensive. Expect a journey into central to total between 45-70GBP ($90-140).
