Gatwick Airport, also known as London Gatwick, is a public airport that serves London, England in the United Kingdom. It is located 2.7 nautical miles (5.0 kilometres; 3.1 miles) north of the centre of Crawley, West Sussex, and 29.5 miles (47.5 kilometres) south of Central London. It is operated by Gatwick Airport Limited and is a hub for British Airways. It is the second-largest international airport in London and the second busiest airport in United Kingdom in terms of passenger volume. Gatwick Airport is the leading airport for point-to-point flights in Europe and has the busiest single-use runway in the world, with a maximum of 55 aircraft movements per hour.

It lies at an elevation of 203 feet (62 miles) above mean sea level. It has two asphalt runways. In 2014, Gatwick Airport handled 38,103,667 passengers and 259,962 aircraft movements.

Terminals

Gatwick Airport has two terminals: North and South, both of which are fully accessible to disabled passengers and have ample restaurant and shops, as well as other services to make transit easier, better, and more comfortable for passengers.

Services and Facilities

Gatwick Airport is well-equipped and has the facilities to meet the passengers’ needs. There are airport lounges, including specialised ones for business travellers. Several airlines also have their corresponding lounges at the airport, including Virgin Holidays’ V Room, the first lounge dedicated to leisure travellers at the airport, for use by Virgin Holidays customers flying to Orlando, Las Vegas, and the Caribbean on sister airline Virgin Atlantic. There’s also No.1 Traveller, an independent pay-for-access lounge located in the South Terminal.

Facilities for baby changing and feeding, and play areas and video games for children, conference and business centre, a chapel and prayer rooms, counselling rooms, PRM special assistance, Internet and Wi-Fi access, money and currency exchange services, luggage and lost property services, and on- and off-site hotels are provided. Numerous restaurants and shopping options abound in the airport as well.

In addition, the airport also houses the Civil Aviation Authority Safety Regulation Group in its Aviation House. WesternGeco, a geophysical services company, has its head office and Europe-Africa-Russia offices in Schlumberger House; and Fastjet has its registered and head offices at Suite 2C in First Point onsite. There’s also Gatwick Connect, a free flight-connection service. It provides assistance to travellers switching flights at the airport whose airlines have no/do not provide services for full flight connection. It is available to passengers arriving on any airline who have an onward flight connection on EasyJet, Flybe, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Thomas Cook Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, or WOW air.

Driving hide 

Gatwick Airport is accessible from a motorway spur road at junction 9A of the M23, which links to the main M23 motorway one mile (1.6 kilometres) east at junction 9; via A23, which serves Horley and Redhill to the north and Crawley and Brighton to the south; and also via A217, which provides access northwards to the town of Reigate.

Trains hide 

The Southern-operated Gatwick Express to Victoria is the best-known service to and from the airport. Other companies, including Thameslink and First Great Western also serve the airport.

Buses hide 

National Express coaches and other local buses ply to and from the airport.

Taxi hide 

The airport offers taxi bookings online, although as of writing, the service is currently disabled due to the London Tube strike.
