Travelling to Karratha in the Pilbara region of Western Australia will mean flying to Karratha Airport (KTA). Opened in the 1960s to support the mining trade, this airport has grown since its inception, and has recently been approved for a $35 million development project to upgrade the airport to support the 800,000 passengers that fly into Karratha each year.
The tourism industry in this part of the country had grown due to the wonderful biodiversity in the region, incredible ancient landscapes, pristine beaches and remarkable national parks. Passengers flying into Karratha today to discover the wonders of the region will be able to make use of the airport’s current facilities, which include a bar and a couple of cafes to enjoy beverages and hot meals in. There is a cash dispensing machine, as well as a Qantas Lounge, a children’s play area, and WiFi access throughout the terminal building. You will also find that the airport has a decent retail area that includes a News Link and a Tech2Go where you can purchase travel accessories or gifts.
There are several airlines that operate out of Karratha Airport, and these are Qantas, Airnorth, Virgin Australia and Alliance Airlines. You will find that Karratha offers a host of direct flights to Perth (PER), Broome (BME), Darwin (DRW), Melbourne (MEL), Port Hedland (PHE), Brisbane (BNE) and Sydney (SYD).
· The rental agencies within the airport are located in the Arrivals area just near the baggage carousels, and you’ll find that Budget, Europcar, Avis, Thrifty and Hertz are all represented. Otherwise, you can book a car reservation online if you’d like to have everything arranged before you arrive. Less than 15km away, the drive into town shouldn’t be longer than 15-20 minutes. Turn onto Dampier Highway, and stay on this road until you come to Sharpe Avenue and turn left. Then turn right onto Barlow Place and you will be in the centre of Karratha.
· The buses are all private transfer and shuttle services, and you can contact these companies directly by looking up their information here, or alternatively you can book an airport transfer in advance through Skyscanner. For the most part though, expect a shuttle service to be about $30 per person.
· Grabbing a taxi from Karratha Airport into the main township isn’t a long journey, but the fare is quite high. Expect the cost of the taxi ride to come to about $45 in total.
