Kununurra Airport

The East Kimberley Regional Airport (KNX), often referred to as simply Kununurra Airport, is the regional aviation facility that services the spectacular Kimberley region in the northwest corner of Western Australia. This part of the Kimberley boasts an ancient topography that rises and falls in ridges, ranges and gorges, typified in the UNESCO listed Purnululu National Park. You can see the mirrored Lake Argyle, or see the uncommon pink diamonds that emerge from the Argyle Diamond Mine.

Flying directly into the East Kimberley Regional Airport is the easiest way to explore this side of the Kimberley region. The aerodrome is situated on the Victoria Highway, and welcomes regular flights—commercial and charter—to its fields. The airport is compact and doesn’t have a large range of amenities, but you will find that the airport has a café and licensed bar where you can enjoy refreshments pre or post-flight. There are short and long-term parking facilities, and car hire agencies that are open during flight operation.

Airnorth is the only commercial airline that flies into East Kimberley Regional Airport (KNX), and this carrier offers direct flights to Broome (BME), Perth (PER) and Darwin (DRW), with the latter hubs offering a large variety of national and international flights with respected global airlines.

Travel Information

· There are three rental agencies within the airport; these are Avis, Budget and Thrifty. Though you can arrange a car rental when you land, travelling by car around the Kimberley region is the most popular way to see it, so you may find if you travel during peak season that cars are in high demand, so reserving your car ahead of time is advised. The airport is only 3.5km from the centre of town and will take you less than 5 minutes to travel, all you do is head east on National Highway 1 towards Laine Jones Drive and you will come directly into Kununurra.

· You can organise a shuttle bus to pick you up when you land, but this must be done in advance. You can call the local company, or arrange a transfer through Skyscanner’s search tool.

· Like the shuttle buses, taxis won’t automatically be at the airport and will have to be pre-booked. Though the journey isn’t long, expect to pay around $15 for a taxi journey to Kununurra.
