Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport (KGI)
The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport (KGI) is the major aviation hub for the historical city of Kalgoorlie, which was founded during the 19th century gold rush in Western Australia. Operating as an airfield for the Australian Royal Air Force from its establishment in the 1920s, the airport transferred to the regional council of the Shire of Boulder in 1989. Now, the airport sees around 250,000 people travelling through its gates to discover the charms of Kalgoorlie, a true darling of the Australian Outback.
The airport doesn’t have a long list of facilities, primarily because it is a fairly compact hub. There is a bar where you can relax with an alcoholic beverage or soft drink, and a snack kiosk if you’re hungry and fancy something to eat while you wait. Angie’s Bar and Kiosk will open 45 minutes before every scheduled flight. The airport does provide passengers with free wireless internet which you can access throughout the airport, which is handy if you are trying to arrange airport transfers, or contact your loved ones to keep them updated on your journey.
Virgin Australia and Qantas fly in and out of Kalgoorlie, and offer daily flights to Perth (PER), and once-a-week flights out to Melbourne (MEL). For more destination options, both Perth and Melbourne have excellent airports that come with a long list of amenities, and an even longer list of international and regional destinations.
· The airport has car hire desks that you can approach when you land; these are Hertz, Budget, Avis and Thrifty. As renting a car is popular in this part of the country, it is recommended that you book a vehicle in advance. You can contact the agencies directly, or use the Skyscanner search tool. Drive down the Hart Kerspien Drive to Gatacre Drive, and then turn right and take the Great Eastern Highway/National Route 94. Turn left onto Throssell Street, and when you come to a roundabout take the third exit onto Hay Street, and then take the first exit onto Lane Street. This will bring you right into central Kalgoorlie.
· The airport is less than 6km from the city, so taking a taxi into town should only take you 10 minutes, and come to a cost about $10. You can find them directly outside the terminal building.
