Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport

Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA)

Iran’s largest aviation facility, and serving its capital of Tehran, is the Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA). This airport completed construction of its main terminal in 2004, and there are two more terminals currently being developed. Eight million people passed through the gates of Tehran’s airport, and this is set to increase, especially given that this port now offers residents and visitors of this city options to fly to over 50 cities in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

There are a decent range of amenities that you can access at this airport, including banks and bureau de change services. You are advised to take advantage of these if you aren’t carrying much cash on you, or don’t have access to a debit card, as credit cards are not widely accepted in this country. You can also utilise the information desks peppered throughout the airport, and find English speaking staff to help you with any queries.

Free WiFi is available throughout the terminal, and there are prayer rooms, and medical services you can access. Currently, there is only one restaurant within the airport, and this primarily serves Persian cuisine. You can also pick up to-go snacks from this food outlet. For shopping, there is a good duty-free area, but be advised this is a dry state, so you won’t find any alcohol here. Otherwise, you can shop in souvenir and gourmet food stores that offer local delicacies, and gift items.

Flights from Australia to Tehran are usually run by airlines like Etihad Airways, Singapore Airlines, IranAir, Thai Airways, Qatar Airways, AirAsia X Qantas, and Singapore Airlines.

Travel Information

·         The airport sits about 40km outside of the central part of the city, and if you intend to drive into town, you must take the Tehran Qom Freeway/Route 7. You will continue on this road and join the Kazemi Expressway to the Cheraghi Expressway, which will then merge into the Navvab Expressway, which is right in the centre part of the town. There are no car hire agencies within the airport, and you will have to rent a car online, and in advance. The company that typically will provide cars is Europcar, though please be advised most options will come with an included driver, which is a recommended added service.

·         If you’d like to use the public transport to get into town, you must take a bus to the Haram Metro station, and then take the metro into town. If you are arriving at rush hour, this can be quite crowded and an uncomfortable method of transportation, especially if you have luggage. It is advisable to therefore either hop in a taxi, or arrange an airport transfer that can pick you up on arrival.

·         Most passengers arriving in Tehran will take a taxi into town, and if you aren’t intending to hire a car with a driver, or book an airport transfer, this is the best way to get into the city. The total journey time will take between 45 and 90 minutes depending on how far you are going and what the traffic is like. Expect the fare to come to around 400,000IRR ($16).

Please note that information is correct as of January 2017.
