Harare Airport

The Harare International Airport (HRE) is the largest and busiest airport in Zimbabwe. This facility opened up to national and international travel in 1957, but since the turn of the early 2000s there has been a drop in tourism, and there are less flights offered due to the current complicated political situation in Zimbabwe. However, this airport is conveniently located only 15km from central Harare and still offers direct flights to 12 destinations around the African continent, including the large international hub of Johannesburg (JNB) in South Africa.

The facilities haven’t been dramatically updated in a long time, but you will still find all the essentials here, including good communications amenities, such as access to WiFi, and a post office. Passengers can also utilise the bank on site, and a bureau de change service. There are extras like medical facilities and a pharmacy.

In terms of refreshments, you can find restaurants and bars for a pick-me-up pre or post flight. There are a selection of shops to buy souvenirs and gifts, as well as duty-free outlets where you can purchase alcohol, tobacco, and cosmetics.

Air Zimbabwe is the flag-carrying airline for the country, and will cover the domestic routes, and for international ones, you can book routes with Kenya Airways, TAAG, Ethiopian Airlines, LAM, Air Namibia, and South African Airways.

Travel Information

·         The drive into Harare central is about 20 minutes long, over a distance of 15km. Get onto Airport Road, and continue down this street until you see Herbert Chitpo Avenue, and turn left. It is advised that if you are planning to drive, that you organise your vehicle online and in advance with Skyscanner.

·         There are a few reliable shuttle companies that can ferry you between the airport, and often hotels will offer their own service. If you’re feeling lost, the easiest way to review your options is to use our price comparison tool for private airport transfers.

·         Taxis are actually more expensive than you’d think, at approximately 240,000ZMK ($38) for the journey into the centre of town. This is due to the taxi drivers having to pay fees to the airport authority.
