Helsinki-Vantaa Airport

As the main international port of entry of Finland, Helsinki-Vantaa Airport makes a convenient transport point in the Scandinavian region as well. It is also one of the busiest airports in Europe, with more than 10 million passengers going here every year. When looking for Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, travellers will find it between 60.3171997 (latitude) and 24.9633007 (longitude), which lies around 17 kilometres north of the city centre of Helsinki. It also lies at an elevation of 179 feet above mean sea level.

Originally built for the 1952 Summer Olympics, the airport became a major passenger hub quickly. It is managed by Finavia, the state-owned enterprise that operates all the airports in Finland. Three runways can be found allowing planes to arrive and take off from here, which respectively measure 11,200 feet, 10,039 feet, and 9,518 feet long. Several domestic and international flights venture here, allowing patients to disembark or board their plane.

Divided into two terminals, travellers making their way around can venture to the internal pedestrian connection both airside and landside. These two terminals serve Schengen and non-Schengen areas. Some parts are enlarged, allowing more flights to arrive at the gates. Ground handling services for airlines is also available for easier operations.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport’s current capacity is around 16 to 17 million passengers every year. More renovations are slated in the following years to increase the number of passengers to 20 million. The terminals are also to be combined with new gates and aircraft stands on the apron. One fascinating aspect of the terminal here is the world's first passenger tracking system, which aims to monitor crowd congestion and prevent bottlenecks automatically.

Airlines currently serving at the airport are Aegean Airlines, Aeroflot, airBaltic, Air Berlin, Arkia Israel Airlines, Belavia, British Airways, Budapest Aircraft Service, Finnair, Gotlandsflyg, Icelandair, Japan Airlines, Jet Time, KLM, Lufthansa, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Primera Air, Scandinavian Airlines, Severstal Aircompany, Snowbird Airlines, SunExpress, Swiss International Air Lines, TAP Portugal, TUIfly Nordic, Turkish Airlines, Ukraine International Airlines, and Vueling.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport serves as a hub for flag carrier Finnair, as well as a base for Blue1, Norwegian Air Shuttle, and Flybe Nordic.
