Guatemala City Airport

The La Aurora International Airport (GUA) is the premier aviation facility for the nation of Guatemala, and the principal hub for Guatemala City, the capital of the nation. This airport is conveniently located only 6km from the centre of the city, and has undergone a huge modernisation, and as a result the amenities here have been vastly improved.

Currently, you can access free WiFi throughout the airport where you can contact friends and family, or any hotels or transport you need to update when you land. There are several ATMs dotted within the airport and a global currency exchange service where you can change over your money if need be.

There are also a few eateries where you can pick up food, and these are serving fairly basic refreshments like sandwiches, coffee and snacks. There are a few fast food outlets too, if you need something quick. You can also purchase up duty-free goods at this airport, including alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, travel accessories and other products. You find two executive airline lounges you can use, and some nearby airport hotels.

You will be subject to connecting flights to Guatemala City if you are flying from Australia, but there are several airlines that operate along this route. These include Qantas, Avianca, American Airlines, Aeromexico, Delta, COPA, United, Hawaiian Airlines, Virgin Australia, American Airlines, and Air New Zealand.

Travel Information

·         There are a host of car rental agencies where you can pick up your reserved vehicle, or make a booking on the spot. The centre of the city is only an 8km drive away, and should take you around 20 minutes in light traffic. All you need do is hop onto Boulevar Liberación, and follow this road right into the city. Please read up on driving in Guatemala if you haven’t before, as the infrastructure, and general safety of road travel may be different from your home country.

·         The typical way to get into town is to travel via shuttle. There are several companies that will charge you around 40-75GTQ ($7-13) for a trip into town. If you’re planning to go a little further afield, to Antigua, expect the charge to rise to 75-115GTQ ($13-20). Buses aren’t generally recommended, partially because they can be confusing to visitors, and partially because they are often subjects of crime. If you’d like to look at a private transfer, you can pre-book these online with Skyscanner.

·         The taxis here are roughly the same as the shuttles, though be prepared for a little haggling, as often the drivers do not want to turn the meter on. Aim for an approximate price of 45-75GTQ ($8-13).
