Cancun International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancún in Spanish) is Mexico’s second busiest airport, behind Mexico City International Airport, and is located approximately 17km from the city centre of Cancun (a 20-minute drive). The airport is made up of three terminals - Terminal 1, 2 and 3 - each operating a different combination of domestic and international flights.

Cancun International Airport is a large, modern airport, and offers a range of different facilities to passengers, and you’ll find slightly different facilities in each of the three terminals. Terminal 2 offers a bank, restaurants, and a range of duty free shops, as well as currency exchange desks, and lockers.
Terminal 2 and 3 also offer an air-conditioned VIP Business Lounge which may be accessed by all passengers departing on international flights only. The lounges are open from 8am to 9pm daily, and offer guests complimentary drinks, canapes, massage chairs, alcoholic drinks, and conference facilities including a telephone and fax (subject to a fee).
All ground transport from Cancun Airport must be prearranged, and the airport’s website is the only provider to authorised officially to sell transport services to passengers arriving into Cancun. Only transportation companies authorised by the airport are allowed to pick up or drop off passengers at the airport. The airport has negotiated special rates with transport providers in the area, and the cheapest rates can be found by booking online in advance through the airport’s website.
Transport is available 24/7, and options include local city buses, taxis, hotel shuttles, private transfers, and limousines.
Non-stop public buses to Cancun City Centre depart every hour from 8:10am to 8pm daily, and the journey takes around 35 minutes. There are is also a non-stop bus route to Playa del Carmen, which takes 65 minutes. All buses depart from Terminals 2 and 3, and the journey costs USD $4 (approx. $5.25 AUD) one way per passenger to Cancun, or USD $10 (around $13.15 AUD) to Playa del Carmen. Tickets can be booked online at the airport’s website in advance in order to guarantee your seat, and get the cheapest price.
