The Bandaranaike International Airport, also referred to as Colombo International Airport, consists of three terminals, serving both domestic and international flights.

There is a wide variety of shops at the airport for travellers to peruse if they have some time to kill. Interestingly, you’ll find numerous electronic appliance shops selling items such as televisions, fridges, ovens, washing machines, and rice cookers. Foreign visitors can purchase duty-free goods such as liquor and wine, and tobacco. If travellers wish to bring home some gifts for their loved ones, they should consider buying Ceylon Tea, a popular Sri Lankan produce. There are other local gifts, handicrafts and souvenirs available for purchase as well.

Food is widely available at the airport. Besides meals, travellers may also sit down, kick back and relax with a drink, such as wine or other forms of liquor. Those in a hurry may visit the snack counters selling sandwiches and finger food for a quick bite.

Travellers wishing to relax in luxury may visit one of the many lounges at the airport. Some of the lounges are pay-to-use, but they offer quiet rest and work areas, comfortable seating, television and newspaper access, internet, and food. Both business and leisure travellers are welcome to enjoy these facilities.

There is a medical centre to cater to travellers feeling under the weather. The centre is staffed with trained and qualified nurses. There are also ambulances on standby, if patients need to be transported to nearby hospitals.

Other services at the airport include banks where travellers can go to exchange foreign currency. There are ATM machines for cash withdrawal as well. The post office located in the arrivals area enables travellers to send out letters or parcels to friends around the world. Additionally, parents travelling with children will be relieved to know that facilities such as changing rooms and play areas are available.

Driving hide 

There are local car rental companies available at the airport for travellers who wish to rent cars. Be sure to have a driving license on hand.

Trains hide 

There is no train station at the airport, but passengers may go to the main train station about a kilometre away to catch trains to their desired destinations.

Buses hide 

There is an airport shuttle bus, which transports travellers to the main bus terminal near the airport. They may then change to other buses heading to the city centre of Colombo or other destinations. Fares vary according to destinations.

Taxi hide 

Taxis may be found outside the terminal buildings. Additionally, the airport runs a taxi service, with a counter located at the arrivals area. Travellers who choose to hire air-conditioned cabs should be aware that these cost slightly more as compared to cabs with no air-conditioning.
