Christchurch International Airport is located around 11km north west by road from Christchurch city centre, and is the main international airport servicing the area. The airport operates 24 hours a day, and is the second busiest airport in New Zealand, behind Auckland International Airport.

Christchurch Airport offers a wide range of services and facilities for passengers to utilise and enjoy before their flight. The airport has a domestic and international terminal, both housed within a single terminal building. The check in hall and arrivals area are both located on the ground floor, while customs, security screening, and the domestic and international departure lounges are located on level 1.

For those interested in doing a spot of shopping before their flight, the airport is home to over 35 stores, including duty free shops selling perfumes, cosmetics, jewellery, books, gadgets, and more. The airport also has a range of dining facilities, including cafes, fast food outlets, restaurants and bars serving a wide range of local and international flavours. Passengers can also enjoy the shops and services at Spitfire Square, the retail development on Memorial Avenue, which is home to a supermarket, gym, pharmacy, and even more restaurants and takeaway food outlets.

For those who need to get online, there is free Wi-Fi available throughout all terminals, as well as internet kiosks within the check-in hall, and in the Departures and Arrivals Halls. There are also ATMs located at both the domestic and international terminals, and currency exchange services and ATMs at the international area.

Travel Information

There are a number of ways to get to and from Christchurch International Airport. For those wishing to drive to the airport themselves, there is a car park at the airport, which can be booked online in advance for the cheapest rates. Online prices start from around NZD $99 (around $94 AUD) for one week.

For those catching public transport to or from the airport, the public Metro Red Bus offers a number of routes which travel via the airport to and from the city centre, including the Purple Line and the Number 29 buses. Tickets can be purchased from the driver onboard, and cost NZD $8 (approx. $7.60 AUD) one way or $14 (around $13.30 AUD) return. Buses depart from outside the far end of the international arrivals terminal. There is also a door-to-door shuttle bus service, the Super Shuttle, which must be booked online in advance, and will take you directly to your accommodation. Taxis are also provided by a number of local taxi companies, and taxi ranks can be found both outside the Regional Lounge, and outside the International Arrivals Hall. Travel time by taxi from the airport to the city centre is around 15-20 minutes, and should cost between NZD $45-$65 (around $42.70-$61.70 AUD)

Driving hide 

Christchurch Airport is accessible from the city via a main road into the airport that is connected with State Highway 1 and Memorial Avenue at a roundabout. The airport is located 15-20 minutes from the city centre of Christchurch.

Buses hide 

Three bus routes from different parts of Christchurch provide service to and from Christchurch Airport terminal. The Purple route covers the city centre via Avonhead and Riccarton; the number 29 route covers the city centre via Fendalton; and the number 125 covers destinations from Redwood to Halswell.

Taxi hide 

Taxis operate from the terminal of the airport, and can also be hailed anywhere within the city.
